Castle Mills: Then & Now | Whose Gallery is it Anyway? sees Edinburgh Printmakers hand over curation of its main gallery space to anyone who would like to see their own artwork on the gallery walls or curate the works in situ. Running from 19 April to 30 June, visitors to the gallery will be invited to: curate artworks on the wall; add their own creations; remove pieces that don’t align with their vision for the space on the day they occupy it; as well as produce new artworks, including performative works, in the space. The exhibition will be a real-time, in-person interactive experience.

Read our full guidelines for participation

Due to the public interest in this exhibition and to try to make sure we can show as many people's work as possible, we have decided for now to restrict the number of works people can bring to one large work up to 210mm x 297mm or two smaller works that together add up to that size.

Watch our EP Culture Conversations, a series of panel conversations with invited expert speakers, to dwell more into the question raised with this project.

With an open call for any and all to contribute artworks to the show, the exhibition freely showcases a wide array of artistic expressions, including printmaking, drawing, textile, sculpture, and performance. As the public continuously modifies the exhibition, it never remains exactly the same, prompting a reflection on printmaking and the visual arts that goes beyond a single curator’s selection. The rules are simple: anyone can add work and/or choose to co-curate the exhibition by moving artworks in the space in ways that make sense to them.

  • The exhibition responds to Edinburgh Printmakers’ shared heritage as a members organisation of 57 years (and the first open access print studio in Britain) as well as now becoming custodians of a Grade C listed industrial building in Fountainbridge where thousands of local people worked. This was mostly during its time as Headquarters of the North British Rubber Company, and now the home of the Wellington Boot is taking a new step in its role as a hub in the heart of the local community promoting discussion and learning in a welcoming environment. Castle Mills: Then & Now is a heritage project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project focuses on growing and diversifying community heritage activities to widen reach and engagement, working with people and communities to generate ideas for new activities.

  • COLLECTION OF SUBMISSIONS!

Thank you for participating in our open exhibition, ‘Whose Gallery is it Anyway?’
