This is a rare opportunity to purchase brand new original works by highly acclaimed Scottish artist Callum Innes.

 

These two new editions by Innes, BB and RR, were created in 2020 under lockdown conditions and were developed from stones that Callum had previously created when working at Edinburgh Printmakers on the series of prints CMW1 & 2. 

 
The studio team rose to the challenges of remote working while Innes spent the lockdown in Norway, sharing photos and ideas by phone, email and even WhatsApp as the works progressed.
 
Both works are embossed with the EPW (Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop) stamp as a mark of their authenticity. All prints are signed and numbered by the artist. BB and RR are both editions of 25 and priced at £650 each.

    The artist

    Callum Innes is the leading minimalist artist living and working in Scotland. His practice spans printmaking and painting. He first exhibited in the mid-to-late 1980’s, emerging as one of the most significant abstract painters of his generation.

     

    Innes has had a long-standing relationship with Edinburgh Printmakers and began to exploring lithography in 2011. He is also an artist Patron of Edinburgh Printmakers and supported our fundraising campaign by donating a print edition in 2018.

     

    Innes was shortlisted for the Turner and Jerwood Prizes in 1995. He won the prestigious NatWest Prize for Painting in 1998, and the Jerwood Prize for Painting in 2002. Collections including his work include the Guggenheim, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Fort Worth Museum, Texas; TATE, London, and Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

    In his most recent lithographs, Innes has worked on the stones in his own studio in Edinburgh. Working within his own studio Innes is able to experiment, to take risks, and sometimes to recognise failure, before working with Master Printer Alastair Clark to build up a series of similarly experimental proof images in the workshop. Surprise and chance play an important role in both stages of the creative process and in the final work.

     

    Innes enjoys the medium of lithography as a means to play with layers of colour, experimenting with ways to remove ink from the stone. The approach is in keeping with his handling of paint on canvas.

    The 20 prints by Callum Innes selected for this exhibition represented the fruits of the artist’s collaboration with Edinburgh Printmakers spanning some fifteen years. In 2004 he worked extensively with Senior Etching Technician Alfons Bytautas to produce suites of monochrome of photopolymer gravure prints. He began to explore lithography in 2011 and has since worked on multiple series of lithographs with Alastair Clark, Studio Director. This major retrospective of his work in print, Prints 2005 – 2019, was an inaugural exhibition at Castle Mills in 2019. 

    Callum Innes’s prints represent an essential element in his recent practice. If the gestures involved in their making are on a smaller scale than those which create his paintings, they are none the less works of similar stature.
