Join us on Saturday 18th January, 1-5pm, for an afternoon of music and intaglio printing using vinyls and listening to a unique record of zany and subversive tunes. In the darkness of January in Scotland, we will re-discover the Prints of Darkness folio published by EP in 2010 as part of an exhibition, which also featured an original score of music produced by Viki Bennet (People Like Us).
The workshops will take place in our Learning Studio at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm and run for 45 minutes. We will also be displaying the Prints of Darkness portfolio in full, a one-off chance to see these wonderfully eerie and mystical prints by 12 contemporary artists working in Scotland.
This exhibition and folio focused on the artform of record covers and how it shaped a specific genre within the visual arts. The folio investigated the historical relationship between a record and the album cover, how visuals and sounds came together to mutually interpret each other. However, "compared to the packaging design of other commodities, the images on record covers are unusually free from constraints imposed by their contents and can have no connection with the music." (Dr. Norman Shaw - Prints of Darkness vinyl sleeve text)
The Prints of Darkness Afternoon is the third instalment of our Unwrapped series of events focusing on rarely seen treasures from our Permanent Collection. We will offer 4 time slots of printmaking workshop led by our Tutor Fiona Maher who has developed her unique visual language by using pieces of or whole vinyls and other objects to print in relief. We will be playing the Prints of Darkness vinyl record to be inspired by the vibrant and uncategorised tunes produced as part of this folio, considering what do Dark Music and Light Music mean to each of us, and create a new original and personal album cover.
