BIOGRAPHY
Rory Hamilton is an artist-printmaker. Recently returned to Edinburgh after many years in London and Copenhagen. In the past he had worked in digital art, installation, and animation. Previous works were shown at Tate Britain and Danielle Arnaud gallery in London. Joining EP has allowed him to develop new work in more traditional techniques, stone and photo lithography, and screenprinting.
“My current work centres around the beach, particularly the gay beaches of Southern Europe. Figures stand alone in some images, looking out for community and connections. Others show pairs in discussion or sitting quietly. The figures in each of these prints are no more than five centimeters tall, I want a sense of distance from viewer to subject. They are not fully aware of being observed. Though of course the beach is always a place to see or be seen. I aim to represent all bodies in this space: large and small, old and young, everyone has a place on these beaches. The prints can be stand alone, but often work well in pairs or groups. The collector can build their own narrative.”
Rory’s recent work has been shown at the RSA, Embassy gallery (Edinburgh), Passing place (Oban), Lothian hospitals (as part of the Tonic Arts and EP exhibition “Handle with care”). A series of his prints has also entered the permanent collection of the Wellcome trust.
