Lina Rica

International Center of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana / Residency, 30 Apr 2022

Croatian artist Lina Rica, who knows from own experience about the challenges of moving from one place to another, worked on the topic of home during her residency at MGLC Ljublaja.

Home can be understood not only as a physical place that an individual owns and belongs to but it also represents a localised set of meanings. Lina has created a three-dimensional spatial model that does not follow the logic of practical, applied architecture, but rather represents the idea of a modular and changeable home. This follows a conceptualisation that goes beyond a one-sided definition; here the home represents the origin, current residence, descent or perception of the world and space, fused with memories, emotions, plans and expectations.

The artist's month-long exploration of this subject, focusing on screen printing as a medium, resulted in a multi-layered graphic project in which she produced 30 monotypes, 16 A4 art prints, three 70 x 100 cm art prints and one 300 x 145 cm work on felt fabric.

The European project In From The Margins seeks to break down barriers and create opportunities for refugee artists and local communities to share and learn from each other. With this in mind, we brought resident artist Lina Rica together with school groups, children and families, as well as with groups of immigrant women of different ethnic nationalities, for whom she conducted workshops on printmaking, presentations of her work and a Studio Doors Open Day. At the end of her month-long residency, she also prepared a pop-up exhibition of her work. During her stay in Ljubljana, the artist made contact with more than a hundred young and old art lovers.

Residency dates: 1 - 30 April 2022
