Exhibition Preview: Castle Mills: Then & Now | Whose Gallery is it Anyway? and This... I Like It

18 Apr 2024

Edinburgh Printmakers warmly invites you to participate in the launch of Castle Mills: Then & Now | Whose Gallery is it Anyway? and This... I Like It

Thursday 18 April

6:30-8:30pm

Castle Mills: Then & Now | Whose Gallery is it Anyway? Anyone can add work and/or choose to co-curate the exhibition by moving artworks in the space in ways that make sense to them. We want to give people and communities agency to take over our large, light-filled, street-facing gallery space and reflect on our heritage and social role, encouraging people to rearrange and add to the exhibition as they see fit.

Everyone contributing work will receive a 10% discount on any purchase in our shop on the night of the preview.

This... I Like It is a joint curatorial project between Edinburgh Printmakers and Tiphereth Print Studio. It is a statement of intent, kinship and belonging, a selection of what draws artists to the medium of printmaking throughout the centuries and still today.

This event is free, and all are welcome. We encourage booking online in advance via the link below. Availability on the evening will be dependent on capacity, refreshments will be served.

Castle Mills: Then & Now | Whose Gallery is it Anyway?

Gallery 1 (19 April - 30 June)

Tues-Sun, 10am-6pm

Bring an artwork to the opening & curate our gallery space!

Castle Mills: Then & Now | Whose Gallery is it Anyway? asks questions about mark-making, art curation and the relationship between artist and audience, tilting the power to give people and communities agency to take over our large, light-filled, street-facing gallery space. We aim to reflect on our heritage and social role, encouraging people to curate and add to the exhibition as they see fit.

This interactive experience promotes discussion and learning in a welcoming environment as part Castle Mills: Then & Now, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The exhibition will invite a wide array of artistic expressions, including printmaking, drawing, textile, sculpture, and performance. With the display evolving continuously, we will reflect on the role of curation and the ownership of gallery spaces.

The rules are simple: anyone can add work and/or choose to co-curate the exhibition by moving artworks in the space in ways that make sense to them.

All are welcome regardless of previous art experience!

This... I Like It

Gallery 2 (19 April - 30 June)

A joint curatorial project between Edinburgh Printmakers and Tiphereth Print Studio, a Camphill community providing support for adults with learning disabilities. This exhibition is part of Castle Mills: Then & Now, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Taking inspiration from Tiphereth’s working methodology based on collectivity, inclusivity and shared ownership, this exhibition looks into curation as a collaborative practice. Tiphereth members were invited to explore the Edinburgh Printmakers Collection, selecting prints and responding to them based on their emotional connections with printmaking and shared practices of communal work.

This... I Like It is a statement of intent, kinship and belonging, a selection of what draws artists to the medium of printmaking over and over again throughout the centuries and still today.
