In Conversation with Susan Aldworth and Gill Saunders

4 Jun 2026
Overview
Join us on Thursday 4 June at 6:30pm for an artist talk to celebrate Susan Aldworth's solo exhibitions Belongings and Modern Alchemy, in conversation with Gill Saunders, formerly Senior Curator of Prints at the V&A.

Gill met Susan in 2009 when she chose her etching Birth of a Thought for the V&A collection, where it was a key work in the exhibition Mapping the Imagination later that year. Since then Gill has been keenly interested in Susan’s career, and has written about her work in Printmaking Today and contributed essays to catalogues. In 2025 she collaborated with Susan to curate a survey exhibition of her prints in the London offices of Clifford Chance.

Their talk at Edinburgh Printmakers will discuss Susan’s printmaking, exploring works in which she has addressed states of mind, memory, and identity – inventing ways and means to give substance to the intangible and immaterial by creating striking visual equivalents, often prompted by the nature of her chosen printmaking processes, and drawing on the complimentary skills of her collaborators. They will focus in particular on recent projects, including the Crossings and Passing Through lithographs (produced with Edinburgh Printmakers) and Modern Alchemy, as well the Belongings installation and the related print.
