In 2014 Louise Hopkins was awarded a travelling scholarship and residency by Edinburgh Printmakers and the British Council through a joint project with the Scottish Print Network called Below Another Sky. She produced two prints during this residency: Arrangement with Moving Parts and Landscape with Red, Blue and Black.

The embossed etching Arrangement with Moving Parts explored the reductive process she had previously employed in her paintings, removing all the land masses and leaving only the oceans.

Biography

Louise Hopkins is an artist living and working in Glasgow, Scotland. She studied at Glasgow School of Art and University of Northumbria. Hopkins teaches at Glasgow School of Art and has been widely published. She worked closely with Edinburgh Printmakers to produce editions for Below Another Sky, a project funded by British Council to support artists to travel and make work.

Hopkins makes paintings and drawings directly onto surfaces that already contain information. She uses world maps, fabric, comics, catalogues, magazines, photographs, folded or crumpled paper and sheet music.

Hopkins’ combines mass-produced materials and with hand crafted interventions. She reflects on reality and artifice, calling in to question the very information the work displays. Her method is durational, labor-intensive and time-consuming. Recently Hopkins has been developing large-scale works for urban and rural locations. Like her works which respond to existing folds and marks on paper, her public-realm installations respond to existing elements of their surrounding environment.

In 2018, Hopkins made Flying Fox - a temporary commission and exhibition at CAMPLE LINE in rural Dumfriesshire. In 2017 she made Dance Number, a temporary wall commission outside the Mackintosh Building at Glasgow School of Art. In 2014 she had a one-person exhibition as part of GENERATION, the celebration of 25 years of Contemporary Art in Scotland. In 2007 she represented Scotland at the 52nd Venice Biennale. In 2005 she had a major one-person exhibition Freedom of Information at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh.

Hopkins' work is held in the collection of Arts Council of England; Artbank, Sydney; British Council, London; City Arts Centre, Edinburgh; Les Abattoirs, FRAC Midi-Pyrenees, Toulouse; Jumex Collection, Mexico City; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Rhode Island School of Design Museum, Rhode Island and Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh.
