Lisa Milroy’s 4-colour screenprint edition was printed at the Edinburgh Printmakers studio by Gillian Murray. Milroy painted a separate acetate for each colour in the screenprint, which gives the work an animated and painterly feel. The print demonstrates her acute interest in form and pattern over content.

Biography

Lisa Milroy is an Anglo-Canadian painter and printmaker. She produced several editions with Edinburgh Printmakers, which were exhibited in the exhibition 40 Years at EP 87-07, 2007.

Her images depict everyday household objects, isolated from their original contexts in a neutral space. They are often arranged in rows or patterns against plain backgrounds. She interested in form more than content. The artist animates objects, imbuing them with a heightened presence. Artworks point outward to experiences of place and travel, and inwards to the careful selection and engagement of the collector. In this way the viewer can find new qualities in the objects, and a new way of looking.

Her paired down approach is also evident in her travel paintings of the 1990s which concentrated on building facades.  In her recent work, most notably her series featuring geishas, Milroy has explored a less linear aesthetic. The geisha paintings are overtly playful and mix different styles of representation.

She studied at Paris-Sorbonne University, Saint Martin's School of Art and Goldsmiths College, London.  Her first solo exhibition. Milroy won the John Moores Painting Prize, 1989. Tate Liverpool showcased a major retrospective of her work in 2001.

Milroy is currently Head of Graduate Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. She gained election to membership of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2005 and was appointed Artist Trustee of Tate from 2013-2017.
