Already having some printmaking experience, Mackenzie took to the process, relishing the ability to proof different versions and explore different colour options. Since then Edinburgh Printmakers have published 9 print editions with Mackenzie, as both lithographs and multi plate etchings.
Biography
Andrew Mackenzie is a Scottish artist. Born in Banff, North East Scotland, the artist lives and works in the Scottish Borders. MacKenzie studied at Edinburgh College of Art.
Andrew MacKenzie was given the Edinburgh Printmakers Award at the SSA Annual Show in 2009 as his vision as painter was identified to translate well into printmaking. MacKenzie worked closely with our printmaking specialists to produce editions. He exhibited with Edinburgh Printmakers in the group shows New Commissions, 2009, and Abstraction from Architecture, curated by Bronwen Sleigh, 2015.
MacKenzie is a painter, printmaker and, more recently, has worked in public-realm installation. MacKenzie calls us to consider how we relate to our surroundings. He draws attention to how we literally and figuratively construct our view of landscape.
MacKenzie's images draw from historic romantic painting conventions and modernist sensibilities. Bold line-drawings of man-made structures intervene with classically rendered natural environments. Graphic depictions of carparks, roads, toilet blocks overlay trees, cliffs and bodies of water. Flat white bands and geometric lines create a tension within the image. Alluding to modernist philosophy, they lead us to consider the artwork as an object more than a single plane image. MacKenzie's work does not consider the viewers gaze as a single point within the image. We understand our point of view to be many shifting viewpoints.
The artist exhibited with David Shrigley, Charles Avery, Callum Innes and Graeme Todd in Parliament of Lines, City Art Centre, Edinburgh, 2012. MacKenzie was commissioned to make three major paintings for the Crown House Project in Holborn, London in 2011. The artist has recieved awards from Scottish Arts Council, Hope Scott Trust Award and Arts Trust Scotland Award. He has exhibited with Sarah Myerscough Gallery, RMIT Gallery, Melbourne, and An Talla Solais, Ullapool.
MacKenzie's artwork is held in the collections of Halifax Bank of Scotland, Bank of America, Fleming Collection, London, Fleming Bank, Singapore; Edinburgh City Art Centre; and Royal Academy, London.
