Vineyards with Casots is part of a series of lithographs on the theme of traditional structures in their landscape, in this case the stone huts, known as casots, found in southern french vineyards. Used for storage and shelter they are often seriously dilapidated, occasionally creatively repaired or repainted in left over colours. Acting as visual punctuation marks in the contours of the landscape they hold the eye compositionally and add structure to the image.
This stone lithograph has been created by building up individually printed layers of semi transparent colour which allows the previous layers to contribute in colour, tone and design to the final outcome. Each layer is drawn and painted on to the stone's smooth surface with lithographic tusche before processing and printing.
Traditional structures in their landscape is a theme I have been pursuing over recent years, appreciating their history and former use, their state of dilapidation and the textures, colours and patterns to be found in rusting metal and peeling paintwork. I have exhibited work on these themes in UK, France and Greece.
This lithograph was made after drawing on site in the vineyards behind Porte Vendres and Collioure in the south of France, where the contours of the landscape are part of the foothills of the Pyrenees as they reach the Mediterranean Sea.
