With its geometric forms and flat areas of considered colour this work is highly representative of Toby Paterson’s artistic practice, which lends itself to the screenprinting medium. Paterson worked with screenprinting on a number of occasions and this work was produced at Edinburgh Printmakers with the assistance of printers Gillian Murray and Alastair Clark to achieve the very demanding and precise qualities required by his work.

Biography

Toby Paterson studied at Glasgow School of Art and School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Glasgow Caledonian University.

Toby Paterson has produced editions with Edinburgh Printmakers specialist technicians. His work appeared in the 2009 exhibition, New Commissions.

Paterson’s works with wall drawings, painting and printmaking. He creates sculptural installation for indoor and outdoor public spaces. He encourages the viewer to consider their perception of the built environment, architecture and the city.

His work explores Modernist architecture during the post-war period. He creatively interprets and re-imagines first-hand experiences of visiting built environments. He highlights the passage of time on building projects, and the economic, social or political ideas behind them.

Paterson is drawn to architectural projects that are overlooked or thought of as unsuccessful. He looks at post-war housing schemes and the decaying remains of utopian building projects. Paterson was born, and is still based, in Glasgow, a city at the heart of the British post-war decline. His engagement with this ever-changing context has informed his representation of space.

In 2002, he won the Beck’s Futures Prize. BBC Scotland commission Paterson in 2007 to install an artwork outside their Pacific Quay, Glasgow. Resetting is notable public commission in the south-west area of The Hague, with Stroom Den Haag, The Netherlands (2013).

Paterson has exhibited in GoMA, Glasgow; Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, Edinburgh; Trongate, Glasgow; Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; The Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw; and The Print Center, New York.
