Katy Dove worked with Edinburgh Printmakers to create 3 prints in 2004. She approached screenprinting with her typically playful creativity. For the pair of prints Double Life and Double You she created shaped characters which were then moved, overlapped and combined in different ways, suggestive of the movement of her stop-frame animations.

The prints were exhibited at Edinburgh Printmakers alongside a full screen presentation of her animation.

Biography

Katy Dove, artist, filmmaker and musician, was born in Oxford and grew up in the Black Isle. She made a singular contribution to art and music in Scotland. Dove was a vital and enthusiastic member of a generation of artists who made significant impact over the last 25 years in the UK and internationally.

Dove studied at University of Glasgow and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.  She was best known for her vibrant and meditative artwork, her brightly coloured animations and her band Muscles of Joy (comprised of female artists).

The artists’s vibrant automatic drawings explore art's visceral potential. Her works in watercolour, fabric, print and moving image use colour in a joyful and expressive way, delicate but with a robust rhythmic pulse.  Her animations paralleled early experimenters in the field of animation. Her performance practice ad animations are grounded in her interest in choreography.

Dove’s background in psychology and interest in art therapy influenced her work. Her practice was collaborative and co-operative. She engaged multidisciplinary creatives in performance nights, dancing, yoga, meditation, farming and gatherings.

Katie Dove passed in 2015, at just 44 years old.

Solo exhibitions of her work include Transmission, Glasgow; Talbot Rice, Edinburgh; and Pump House, London. Katie Dove was one of the first artists to represent Scotland at the Venice Biennale, 2003. She exhibited at Duff House, Banff for Generation (2014). A memorial exhibition of her work was held at Dundee Contemporary Arts and travelling to galleries in the north of Scotland, 2016.
