Mary Walters
"I find inspiration for my art in landscape. I enjoy the landscape of mountains, where geological time manifests itself through gigantic landforms; the landscape of the edge, where land meets water; and the landscape of memory, an intangible, elusive, yet powerful melting pot of images and ideas."
But it is the impermanence of these landscapes which is of paramount interest – rocks which seem solid are constantly engaged in a process of reformation. The relatively insignificant human marks – the rust, the cracks, the scratched graffiti, the distressed surfaces and the torn edges – also contribute to the layered interplay and re-invention.
Recently my inspiration has come from fluidity and impermanence in the rapidly changing icy landscapes of the North – developed from travels in Norway and Svalbard.
BIOGRAPHY
Mary Walters is an Edinburgh-based visual artist, mainly working in print and mixed media. Her key inspiration comes from wild landscapes – their geology and geomorphology – a result of her early study of these subjects. She tries to let the ideas she wishes to express define the medium in which she works as an artist.
Mary graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2013, and has recently been accepted as a professional member of the Scottish Society of Artists.
