BIOGRAPHY

Until Chalmers retired from teaching a number of years ago, the artist had never made a print of any kind in his life. Chalmers did his first printmaking (summer) course at the old EP venue in Union Street in 2013. It was a digital Screenprinting course with Gillian Murray and Leena Nammari. Since then, Chalmers has done a number of courses at Edinburgh Printmakers, most recently with Kelly Stewart (screen printing) and Angie Lewin (wood engraving).

The artist has always been interested in photography (both DSLR and mobile phone) and often revert back to using photographic images in new ways.

In recent months, he has experimented with making photopolymer gravure prints using a variety of techniques, papers and inks. In the future he would like to experiment with a range of printmaking techniques to see where that may go.

Although Chalmers paints and draws as well, printmaking gives him a great deal of pleasure (and occasional frustrations!) and the artist loves embracing the different technical and artistic challenges it offers.
