Gordon Williams
"What I enjoyed most about printmaking was working and sharing ideas alongside alongside others in a studio setting. That, and the anticipation of the ‘reveal’ when the print emerges from the press. "
BIOGRAPHY
Gordon Williams was bron in Berwick upon Tweed, but first became fascinated by printmaking while working as a teacher of art in Greater Manchester and Yorkshire. He enjoyed the opportunity and incentive to experiment with lino, screenprinting and photography in his professional and personal practice.
In the course of study and research at Leeds Met and exposure to the particular ‘magic’ of the etching studio, he decided to pursue his practice and academic interest further.
Much of his printmaking derives from an annual overland ‘migration’ to Italy and the sketchbooks and photographs produced since 1983 of his ‘not so grand tour’. After retirement from full time art teaching in 2007, he became a member of Edinburgh Printmakers where he have exhibited etchings, photo etchings and Toyobo prints in the annual members exhibition and the RSA Open Exhibition.
ARTIST STATEMENT
"I began printmaking while working as an art teacher in secondary schools and universities. Following a research fellowship at the Henry Moore Institute and an art teachers bursary at the British School in Rome I was able to develop my interest in the art and culture of Italy and to use this to inform my own practice. Since becoming a member of Edinburgh Printmakers in 2013 I have explored different methods of printing at both ‘the steamie’ and Castle Mills exploring etching, Toyobo plate and photo-etching, lithography, and screen printing.
"Since returning to printmaking in Edinburgh I have shown works at the Royal Scottish Academy Open Exhibition (2014 and 2015), Imprint: Studio 11 as part of the Hull U.K. City of Culture celebration (2017), Humber to the Wash at Ropewalk Gallery: Barton upon Humber (2016) and Deluge at Edinburgh Printmakers (2018)."
