Carla Smith
Focusing on methods of sustaining and nurturing human relationships, Carla Smith explores our nuanced social landscape. Carla frequently uses food as a medium to navigate tender, celebratory moments. She often uses socially engaged methods, encouraging participation through multi-sensory, communal experiences such as shared meals; inviting audiences to be a part of the artwork through touch, taste, smell and conversation.
Carla is excited about pushing materiality and during a recent residency with Peacock & the Worm, a print studio in Aberdeen, she experimented with combining printmaking, ceramics and food work. Beyond this, Carla works across various mediums from film to bookmaking.
With a desire to articulate the unnoticed and delicate interactions which hold our relationships, Carla’s work often invites audiences to reconsider everyday moments. Offering fresh perspectives and fostering affection for the vast and beautiful complexity of being alive.
