Irena Narbutt
"I focus my art on working on intuitive drawing enquiry. Through drawing dialogue practice, unconscious and conscious phenomena, both abstract and concrete realities become visible and observable. Through this process images and their aesthetic qualities emerge."
Irena Nerbutt uses playful and spontaneous intuitive approaches to discover drawing phenomena, and from these she is able to build ideas and concepts. In addition to drawing, she also uses a written journal in which she records observations and reflections on her art practice. She is also interested in poetical thinking and expressive language to help her explore and add further insight into her work.
Since 2012 she has been working with stone lithography printmaking. This technique is particularly resonant with her work, as the stone's own intrinsic characteristics extend the organic nature of the drawings. By working directly onto the stone, she is able to continue the focus of her work in the essentially un-preconceived approach she uses, and let it evolve in new directions. Stone lithography working inspires and enriches her art practice immeasurably.
BIOGRAPHY
Irena Narbutt graduated in Fine Art Sculpture BA (Hons) in 1984 from Exeter College of Art and Design. Returning to her home in London, she subsequently trained as a Stained Glass Designer and worked in two commercial glass studios. In 1991 she moved to live and work in Scotland. Settling in Glasgow, she joined WASPS Studios and continued to work as a glass artist and art tutor. In 1998 she studied Art Therapy at QMC, Edinburgh, and graduated in 2000, PG Dip. Art Therapy. This study has informed and helped Irena develop her focus and understanding of process-based art practice.
Irena continues to work in stone lithography and is a regular exhibitor at both Edinburgh Printmakers and Glasgow Print Studio where she is also a member. She has shown her work in various galleries and venues internationally, including the Beaux-Arts, Paris (Glass Lamp 1988), and in 2018 her stone lithograph print A Present was part of Edinburgh Printmakers' showcase of work at Impact 10 Print Biennale, Santander, Spain.
