Lynda Wilson
BIOGRAPHY
I studied architecture at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) and then worked as an architect for several years before returning to ECA to teach in the design studio. I was able to fulfil my original ambition to be an artist (discouraged by school art teachers) when I finished teaching and began exploring various art media and techniques, before settling on printmaking as my most favoured activity.
In 2020-21 I completed a year-long printmaking course and in 2021-22 a year long course in Contemporary Art Practice, both at Leith School of Art and then a short credited course in Intaglio Printmaking – Contemporary Approaches at Edinburgh University.
I have exhibited in various galleries and group shows, and my work is in private and public collections - a full list is available on my website.
My subject matter closely relates to my previous career as an architect and most of my work begins on location through my sketchbook and photos. Screenprinting, lino printing and monoprinting are used to develop my ideas at Edinburgh Printmakers or in my own garden studio near the Pentland Hills. I also make artist books and am a member of the collective bound:unbound.
The most recent work focusses on brutalist architecture and its recurring motifs. This has been expressed through 3D printmaking with plaster forms as well as the usual flat prints. The resulting work can be abstracted or representational, but even with the latter there is a degree of abstraction, it is never a direct interpretation. The flat graphic quality of screenprinting really suits my work which in itself tends to strong forms and bold compositions.
