Biography

BIOGRAPHY

Lynda Wilson studied architecture at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) and then worked as an architect for several years before returning to ECA to teach in the design studio. She was able to fulfil her original ambition to be an artist (discouraged by school art teachers) when she finished teaching and began exploring various art media and techniques, before settling on printmaking as her most favoured activity.

In 2020-21 she completed a year-long printmaking course and in 2021-22 a year long course in Contemporary Art Practice, both at Leith School of Art and then a short credited course in Intaglio Printmaking – Contemporary Approaches at Edinburgh University.

She has exhibited in various galleries and group shows, and her work is in private and public collections - a full list is available on my website.

Her subject matter closely relates to her previous career as an architect and most of her work begins on location through her sketchbook and photos. Screenprinting, lino printing and monoprinting are used to develop her ideas at Edinburgh Printmakers or in her own garden studio near the Pentland Hills. She also makes artist books and is a member of the collective bound:unbound.

Her most recent work focusses on brutalist architecture and its recurring motifs. This has been expressed through 3D printmaking with plaster forms as well as the usual flat prints. The resulting work can be abstracted or representational, but even with the latter there is a degree of abstraction, it is never a direct interpretation. The flat graphic quality of screenprinting suits her work which in itself tends to strong forms and bold compositions.
