Victoria Crowe
Following a residency in Orkney, Midnight Dawn, Birsay and Night Reflection
were developed in the print studio at Edinburgh Printmakers. Based on sketches of dusk and the gloaming evening light after sunset, they explore the mood, colour and light.
Crowe explored working on stone to produce lithographs with characteristic delicate tusche washes and pen and ink line akin to the watercolour sketches she produced up in Orkney.
Working closely with Lithographer Alastair Clark these works make extensive use of layering and inking with colour blending to create gradations with the small edition sizes reflecting the hand printed nature of each layer.
“The lengthy twilights and midnight dawns of the Orkney landscape at midsummer were visually quite extraordinary. I made many paintings and studies while I was there, and I really enjoyed the chance to work through these ideas again when I returned to Edinburgh. To work in a printmaking medium always extends the idea visually, and it was a great experience to work with Stone Lithography aided by Alastair and his unfailing expertise”
