Roberto Gonzalez Fernandez had his first contact with Edinburgh Printmakers in 1980, when the studio was based in the upper floor of The Fruitmarket Gallery. He was preparing at the time for his first one-man show for Henderson Gallery, Edinburgh, and was commissioned to produce a lithograph. Although he had already worked in this medium in Madrid it was Ken Duffy, who was at that time director of Edinburgh Printmakers, who really introduced him to the world of lithography, showing him all the possibilities of this technique.

In the following years Gonzalez Fernandez worked extensively with Alfons Bytautas, Master Printer at Edinburgh Printmakers, experiment with new soft ground etching techniques. From 1997 to 2002 he made more than 25 pieces in the studio using these new techniques in combination with traditional methods.

Gonzalez Fernandez’s approach to his art could be defined as a mixture between conceptual art and realism. His continuous concern for ‘space and time’ is conveyed in the narrative style of his work, with each series generating its own pictorial vocabulary.

BIOGRAPHY

Born in Monforte de Lemos, Spain in 1948. Studied Fine Arts at Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid from 1969 to 1974. In 1977 he moved to Edinburgh. Since 1982 he has lived and worked between Madrid and Edinburgh. In 1984 was awarded a grant by "The New York Foundation for the Arts". He has had more than 120 solo exhibitions and numerous group shows all over the world.
