Ann Ross was invited to produce a body of work at Edinburgh Printmakers in 2004. Ross’s primary practice is as a watercolourist, and she was approached to work in the print studio as her painting technique – layering in washes of colour – lends itself directly to stone lithography.

"I try to paint time and place.  As I travel, I record special combinations of light, colour and shape.  I note rhythms in the landscape and traditions in the architecture, the traces of decay and restoration - and try to fix those details in my mind.  I use these remembered images - distilled memory - to make pictures in my studio in Edinburgh recalling structure and beauty of those moments.  Painting in watercolour is an adventure; a journey into recalled light, colour and shape; the memory becomes an image of time and events."

BIOGRAPHY

Ann Ross RSW was born in Edinburgh and studied at Edinburgh College of Art.  A travelling scholarship took her to Italy early in her painting career, and was to mark the beginning of a long journey inspired by memories of a different time and place.

Ross’s work is inspired by her travels across Britain and abroad. Her prints recall memories of different cultures and light alongside and the patterns and rhythms of architecture and landscape.

She continues to live in Edinburgh and exhibits regularly in various galleries throughout Britain including the Royal Scottish Academy.  A professional member of The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours and the Society of Scottish Artists, she has won many awards including the First Prize Pernod Art Prize; Scottish Arts Council Commission Award; RSW Council Award; The Scottish Arts Club Award, RSW Exhibition, and The William Gillies Award, RSW Exhibition.
